Film Making in a Virtual Real World
Film making within a real-time 3D virtual real world (VRW) environment is now possible using real-time 3D-engine technology. By definition, it is the convergence of film making, animation, real-time, and digital CGI development. Real-world film making techniques are applied within an interactive 3D first-person virtual real world environment where characters and events can be either controlled by humans, scripts, or artificial intelligence.
By combining the techniques of film making, animation production, and the technology of the latest real-time 3D-engines has made for a very low cost, and time efficient way to produce films, with a large amount of creative control with hyper-realistic models and textures (sometimes known as Machinima).
Film Making can be script-driven, whereas the cameras, characters, effects etc. are scripted for playback in real-time. While similar to animation, the scripting is driven by events rather than key-frames. Cinematics can also be recorded in real-time within the 3D virtual real world environment, much like real world film making (the majority of takes or pieces are produced in this fashion).
While both of these approaches have their pros and cons, they are both viable techniques.
